How to Become Smarter – 7 Steps to Advancing In Life

In today’s society, it doesn’t take much intellect to become successful. I mean, really, there are people that make six figures posting videos of their cat on YouTube! Followed by website holders, fitness coaches, at home chefs, you name it!

But wait, have you ever stopped to think about if those actually ARE the smart people? Think about it, while your clocking into a job you probably hate to donate 80 hours or more a week just to barely scrape by, they are working two thirds less than you are, living the life you could only dream of! Makes you think right!? About whose really the dumb one!

Side note: i am not saying that having a job makes you dumb by any means. What i am saying is that , people have figured out a way around traditional means. I ask you to take note to the approach, not the method;)

That takes me into my next point. Regardless of the field your are in, intelligent people tend to make more in our society. They tend to lead better lives, sustain healthier diets, and make 5 and 6x times more than the average American. For example, Scientificbrains.com writes, “Yes people with higher IQ’s do make more money. According to a very old study carried out in USA in 1921.” In this study, kids were selected for an experiment based on their individual IQ levels. The results they found were precisely what they expected: “when Lewis Terman revisited them 6 years later, he found that smarter kids are stronger, taller and healthier. And in 1955, almost 30 years later. These selected children have an annual income that is more than 6 times that of an average American.” (Scientificbrains.com)

The kids in the these studies showed signs of genius level talent by the way. I know what you’re thinking, if your like the rest of us, we were not born geniuses.

I’d like to call attention to what German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said about becoming a genius: “Do not talk about giftedness, inborn talents! One can name many great mean of all times who were very little gifted. They acquired greatness, became geniuses (as we put it) through qualities that of which no one would boast of; they all possessed that seriousness of the efficient workman which first learns to construct parts properly before it ventures in to fashion a great whole.”

With the recent advancements in technology to date, its easier now more than ever to access information. Hard work beats talent any day of week and work is always just a button away!!

Also, billionaire Warren Buffet once said in his book, “Warren Buffett Speaks” :“You don’t need to be a rocket scientist. Investing is not a game where the guy with the 160 IQ beats the guy with a 130 IQ. Rationality is essential,” He then went on to add that what would be essential to have over brains in his line of work would be emotional stability and the ability to think independently. Not that, an IQ of 130 is average. According to cnbc.com, the average IQ’s in America range from 85-115.

Looks like we have some work to do, no?

Benefits of a Higher Intelligence

Considering those major points, becoming smarter could benefit you in a multitude of ways:

  • Drastically increase your income– “The more you learn the more you earn.” If you uncover more about your desired field or other fields of potentiality, it could lead to that promotion, second source of income, or the career you’ve always wanted!
  • Improve your love life – As you acquire more knowledge, you’ll find that you actually know what say and do in the right situations. You become more valuable and alluring to your potential lovers.
  • Develop your social skills   Its easier to find common ground with people from all walks of life because you can understand cultures/ ideas/ practices unlike your own.
  • Manage your funds –  Can help you to understand the importance of a dollar. Smarter People usually have more income because they understand how the money system works.

With no further ado, we approach the great HOW of it all.

How to become smarter you ask??

We’ve listed 7 small ways you can increase your IQ today!

How to Become Smarter – 7 Steps to Advancing In Life

1. Books! : Shortening the learning curve.

One of the most obvious and expected ways to become smarter in our society today is to read! Reading is how we learn about the world around us, whether that world is fitness, psychology, spiritual, culinary , financial, etc.

For example, a famous known book lover billionaire Bill Gates once said: “Every book teaches me something new or helps me see things differently. I was lucky to have parents who encouraged me to read. Reading fuels a sense of curiosity about the world, which I think helped drive me forward in my career and in the work that I do now with my foundation.”

Books offer insight into the unknown. There’s an old saying , which says that there are things we know, things we don’t know, and things we don’t know that we don’t know! Books offer opportunities for mentorship from people who are either often dead or too busy to train you themselves. Extensive reading habits, like internet marketer Tai Lopez’s one book a day diet, can literally propel you miles ahead of your competition.

  • This book details how the human brain operates in terms of performance and the effects of controlling your thinking pattern.
  • Follows the astounding research developed by neuroplasticity researcher Jefferey M. Schwartz and psychiatrist Rebecca Gladding.
  • “refine a program that successfully explains how the brain works and why we often feel besieged by overactive brain circuits (i.e. bad habits, social anxieties, etc.) the key to making life changes that you want—to make your brain work for you.”
  • Great for anyone looking to achieve higher intellect!

Some famous successful people who read regularly

  • Elon Musk
  • Oprah Winfrey
  • David Rubestein
  • Mark Cuban
  • Phil Knight
  • Bill Gates
  • Warren Buffet
  • Mark Zuckerberg

2. Debates vs Arguments!

We all have those argumentative people in our lives that absolutely have to have the last word. But what’s the difference between an argument and AN argument. Arguments result from a lack of understanding (intellect) and usually involve two sides who are more concerned about being right than understanding each other. AN argument is a theory or opinion formulated from a person’s particular perspective. The second kind of argument, leads to something healthy and necessary for evolution: debates! Debates challenge ideas in order to refine, improve, and update them. In a debate, the goal is truth and how that truth can only be attained between two opposing points: aka “the middle ground”

Think of how far we’ve come in just a century due to the power of debating! A wise man once said that you have no argument until you can argue your opponents argument better than he can!

3. Your Argument= My Argument

This leads me into my next point. The good old “gray area” or “middle ground” which in terms of social dynamics, refers to the common ground found between two opposing points.Ever hear that old saying, “there’s three sides to every story: yours, mines, and the truth!” If you’ve ever wondered how to become smarter, this is a really valuable tip.

For example, the great philosopher Plato once said on his death bed:” I am the wisest man alive because I know one thing, that i know nothing.”

What one of the fathers of modern science and philosophy meant by this was that to every seemingly impenetrable argument, lies an equally impenetrable argument seeking to disprove it. What Plato understood was that perspectives (arguments) at the end of the day, are just that: perspectives. As you open your mind and ears to more perspectives other than your own, you find that we never really “know” anything for certain. If you believe one thing, while your neighbor believes another, who is essentially right? Exactly! We don’t know! Imagine the waves of reform that could be accomplished if the world could agree on this one truth.

4. Take Online Classes

It’s a scientific fact that college graduates make more than non college grads. However, we are in an interesting time. Now, more than ever people are beginning to take back the power of freedom when it comes to income. From affiliate marketing, to YouTube fashion advice, to online success tips, people have begun to find ways around the traditional clock-in, clock-out work week.

We have shifted into a more digital age where you can make literally millions, sometimes billions of dollars without ever leaving your pajamas. This recent spike into direct producer to consumer education has made millions question the authenticity of standard western school curriculum. While schooling can undoubtedly lead you into debts of hundreds of thousands of dollars, online courses like famous entrepreneur Tai Lopez’ s 2 month 67 steps to become a millionaire, can cost you anywhere from 100-5000$ as a one time fee(a big difference) .Or, Sites like Wealthy Affiliate that offer courses on how to build and market an online business for just 47$ a month!

There’s a large world of alternative online courses out there that teach actual practical skills for money management,  asset to debt ratios ,site building, investing, marketing, culture, etc. The things traditional schooling neglected to explain to a large population of us. Long story short, if you can think it, there is a very good chance there are potential courses and tools out there that can be capitalized on. .

5. Play games?

Games have been around since we could walk and talk as an intellectual species. Games like Chess, which encourage you to strategize by thinking 2 sometimes 10 steps ahead of your opponent can greatly alter your perception in the world. Your brain is muscle, just like the scrawny guy that wants an amazing body goes to the gym, these following games really help to workout your mind by forcing you to solve complex problems and think of clever strategies.

  • Lumosity
  • FitBrains
  • Mahjong
  • Tetris
  • Monopoly
  • Scrabble

6. Surround Yourself with Intelligent People.

A wise man once said , “if your the smartest person in the room, your in the wrong room.” The theory about becoming who you associate with is not just a theory. Studies show that your group of friends rub off on you more than you think. While giving up on your friends would never be a suggestion, managing your time to spend with people who are smarter than you might be.

A smarter crowd encourages you to never stop learning while offering you a chance to debate and refine your own ideas and beliefs.

7. Never become satisfied or complacent with knowledge.

Billionaire Warren Buffet once said, that your “not considered old until you’ve stop learning.” As you wander throughout life, you’ll find that things are always evolving. What if 100 years ago we decided that there was no more to be learned? Would we have things like internet, smart phones, international space stations, and electric cars? Every year we discover more about the planet we live on, and every year we destroy to build new stronger ideas. To become complacent with knowledge is to assume that there is nothing more to be learned.

Easier said than done my friend haha. Intellect can definitely lead to nasty things like elitism and narcissism . Warren Buffet says its healthy to throw out one strongly held believe a year.
